A forecast icon cannot tell you whether a particular wall is ready for paint. In Tampa Bay, one elevation may remain shaded and damp while another becomes hot in direct sun. A useful weather record separates the forecast from conditions at the surface, then checks both against the instructions for the exact primer or coating being applied.
This field log is a planning and documentation tool. It does not replace a product label, technical data sheet, manufacturer guidance, site-specific judgment, or a contractor's safety plan. Product limits differ, and a coating that tolerates one set of conditions may not tolerate another.
What to record before exterior painting
Create one record for each work period and each elevation. Do not reuse a morning reading for an afternoon application or assume the shaded north wall matches a sunlit west wall.
- Project and product: address; elevation; substrate; primer or coating; color and sheen; technical data sheet revision.
- Forecast: observation time; expected rain start; hourly rain probability; overnight low; expected humidity; sunset time.
- Surface: visual dryness; surface temperature; air temperature; dew point; calculated surface-to-dew-point spread.
- Application: start and stop time; coat number; area completed; applicator initials; unusual wind, shade, or direct-sun conditions.
- Protection period: the manufacturer's stated rain or dew window; observed rain or condensation; time of final inspection; disposition if conditions changed.
Calculate the dew-point spread instead of guessing
Use this field calculation: surface temperature minus dew point equals dew-point spread. For example, a wall at 82°F and a dew point of 75°F has a 7°F spread. That number is not automatic permission to paint; compare it with the current data sheet for the exact product.
Benjamin Moore describes an industry practice of keeping the surface more than 5°F above the dew point, while Sherwin-Williams advises keeping conditions within the suggested range and above the dew point after application. Those sources are useful planning references, but the product-specific label and data sheet remain controlling.
Use five checkpoints for every elevation
- Before preparation: record active leaks, visible growth, chalking, peeling, cracks, failed sealant, and irrigation contact. Weather logging does not make a defective surface sound.
- After washing: document when cleaning ended and when the surface was confirmed dry. A dry-looking face does not prove that cracks, joints, wood, or porous masonry are dry.
- Before the first coat: identify the product, confirm air, surface, and material conditions, read the rain or dew limits, and record the measurement location.
- Before each later coat: repeat the readings and confirm the required recoat interval. Do not carry yesterday's conditions into today's record.
- At shutdown: note the last application time and compare the remaining dry-weather window with the manufacturer's protection requirement.
Treat each side of the house as a separate microclimate
A useful log names the wall, not merely the property. Morning shade can preserve overnight moisture. Direct sun can make a wall much hotter than the reported air temperature. Roof runoff, sprinklers, dense landscaping, and nearby paving can change drying conditions within a few feet. Record readings near the application area without placing anyone in an unsafe position.
When conditions move outside the product limits, the log should show a stop decision, not a revised memory. Record the time, affected area, and what will be inspected before work resumes.
Separate weather readiness from surface readiness
A perfect forecast does not correct mold, wet materials, contamination, loose coating, or unresolved water entry. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says moisture control is the key to mold control and advises against painting or caulking moldy surfaces. Correct the moisture source and complete the appropriate cleanup before treating the area as a coating project.
Preparation can create a separate lead-safety question on pre-1978 housing. EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting program covers paid work that disturbs painted surfaces in many pre-1978 homes and child-occupied facilities. Establish the building age and appropriate lead-safe path before scraping or sanding; a weather window does not answer that compliance question.
A concise go, pause, or stop record
- Go: the surface is ready, current readings fit the exact product instructions, and the protection window is adequate.
- Pause: a measurement is missing, a surface is still drying, rain timing is uncertain, or the wall temperature is moving toward a limit.
- Stop and reassess: rain or condensation arrives, the surface falls outside the product range, an active moisture issue appears, or preparation exposes an unexpected condition.
The value of the log is not that it produces more green lights. Its value is that a homeowner, contractor, manufacturer representative, or future maintainer can see which facts supported the decision at the time.
